I sent a message to my local NBC affiliate –
Hello 9 news staff;
Rock Center aired a story last night about the profitability and health claims surrounding the Gluten free market. I cannot find a link to the actual story as it aired!
Unfortunately some of the nutritional luminaries who were interviewed including Mark Sisson and Mark Hyman did not get a chance to discuss the larger issues of grains and sugars.
Gluten is only one problem and yes only 1% may have a true Gluten allergy but Gluten free products contain, Lectin, Carbohydrates and Sugars which unto themselves are all inflammatory and lead to the development of chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart disease and premature ageing, just to name a few.
These so called healthy Gluten free products are void of healthy Proteins, Fats, Minerals, Vitamins and Micronutrients.
I see several patients in my office who are Gluten free including some of the 1% who are Gluten allergic and suffer from Celiac disease. Guess what happens to them on Gluten free diets? They tend to gain weight, feel terrible and develop these chronic diseases.
I do not see anything healthy about Gluten free labeling. What about the consumption of real foods instead like fresh meats, vegetables and fruits?
In my estimation this story missed the mark as it relates to nutrition and health!
