This is a good story about coconut oil and ketones. The only problem is that they left out a discussion of the benefits of of low-carb diets! A friend sent me this story and here is my reply.
We are now 10+ years prescribing low-carb and Paleo diets which are ketogenic or keto-adaptive. These diets treat much more then just Alzheimer’s disease. Coconut oil and other fats can produce ketones, but only when doing a low-carb diet. They leave this part out because people are scared away when discussing low-carb. But, based on the scientific evidence low-carb diets treat diabetes, heart disease, atherosclerosis, depression, arthritis, etc. Burring fats, to generate ketones, may be a preferred fuel source, a sustainable fuel. Dietary carbohydrates, the predominate fuel source in the US diet, wreak havoc on insulin and metabolism and comes in spurts. It is hard to burn body fat and generate ketones if the body is overloaded with dietary carbohydrates. Alzheimer’s might be caused by our unhealthy high-carb diet. A ketogenic diet is a preventive diet. The story even mentions the benefits of ketones and prevention.
